When your back aches, what’s the first thing you do?
Perhaps you stretch. Maybe you book a massage, change your pillow or rub cream into the painful area. You might even tell yourself, “I’m just getting older.”
Most of us naturally focus on the place that hurts. It seems logical. If your back is painful, surely your back must be the problem.
But what if it isn’t?
Our body is an interbreed system
One of the most fascinating things about the human body is that it constantly adapts to keep us moving. When one area isn’t working as efficiently as it should, another part quietly steps in to help. These small compensations often happen without us ever noticing.
Over time, however, they can begin to create tension, stiffness and discomfort in places that were never the original problem.
As a result of this happening, the way we breathe changes, with out us noticing.
Most people think breathing is simply about getting oxygen into the body. In reality, breathing plays an important role in how we move. It influences your posture, spinal mobility, shoulder movement, core stability, balance, pelvic floor function and even the efficiency of your walking.
Every day you take around 20,000 breaths, more if you have a shallow breath. If those breaths are shallow, rushed or mainly coming from your upper chest, your body has to find another way to create movement and stability.
This is where compensation begins.
Instead of your diaphragm doing most of the work, the muscles in your neck, shoulders and upper back often become much more active. Your lower back may also begin working harder to stabilise your spine because your deep core muscles aren’t providing the support they were designed to offer.
The result?
You may notice tight shoulders that never seem to relax, an aching lower back, stiffness through your spine or feeling tired after activities that once felt easy.
That doesn’t automatically mean your breathing is the cause of your pain. Pain is always complex and there can be many contributing factors.
However, breathing is one of the first things I assess because it influences so many of the systems that help your body move well.
Throughout my years as an Exercise Therapist, I’ve met countless people who believed they simply needed stronger muscles, more stretching or a completely different exercise programme.
Often, what they really needed was a better understanding of how their body was working.
Once you recognise why your body has developed certain movement patterns, everything starts to make more sense. Instead of constantly treating the symptoms, you can begin addressing one of the reasons your body may have been compensating in the first place.
Improving your breathing isn’t about taking bigger breaths.
It’s about helping your body move the way it was designed to move.
When breathing becomes more efficient, many people notice less unnecessary muscle tension, easier movement, improved posture and greater confidence in everyday activities.
Your body often works less because it’s finally receiving the support it has needed all along.
Discover the Honest Body Retreat – The Power of Breath
This August, I’m inviting just five people to join me for a very different kind of retreat.
This isn’t another fitness class or a session where you’ll simply be told to exercise harder.
Instead, we’ll explore how your breathing influences the way your body moves, why certain muscles become overworked, and how small changes can help reduce unnecessary tension and improve the way you feel every day.
My aim isn’t simply to teach you breathing exercises.
It’s to help you understand your own body.
Because when you understand your body, you begin making decisions based on knowledge rather than guesswork.
If you’ve been stretching, massaging and managing your aching back without really understanding why it keeps returning, perhaps it’s time to look at the problem from a different perspective.
Sometimes the answer isn’t where the pain is.
The goal isn’t to convince you that breathing is the answer to every ache or pain. The goal is to help you understand whether it’s one of the reasons your body has been working harder than it needs to.
Honest Body Retreat
The Power of Breath
Saturday 1st August | 10:00am – 1:00pm
The Old Library, Kilbarchan
Could the way you breathe be the reason your body feels stiff, tense or tired?
Perhaps you’ve tried stretching.
Maybe you’ve had massages.
Perhaps you’ve been told to strengthen your core or improve your posture.
Yet your neck still feels tight.
Your back still aches.
Your shoulders still carry tension.
What if your body is simply working harder than it needs to?
The Honest Body Retreat is designed to help you understand how your breathing influences the way your body moves, supports itself and responds to everyday life.
This isn’t about learning complicated breathing exercises.
It’s about understanding your body and discovering how small changes can make movement feel easier, more comfortable and more confident.
Why is this retreat different?
Unlike large group workshops, this retreat is limited to just five participants.
That means I can spend time with each individual, looking at how your body moves, rather than teaching general exercises that may or may not suit you.
Everything we cover throughout the morning is guided by what I see during your assessment and what your body needs.
No two people are exactly the same.
Neither should their advice be.
What you’ll experience
Hour One
Honest Body Posture Assessment
The morning begins with an individual posture and movement assessment.
Each participant receives approximately 10–12 minutes of one-to-one assessment while the rest of the group observes and learns from the process.
I’ll assess how your body is aligned, identify movement patterns that may be contributing to tension or discomfort, and explain how these influence the way you breathe and move.
You’ll leave with a far better understanding of your own body.
Hour Two
Breathing That Supports Your Body
This is where everything starts coming together.
We’ll explore how your breathing affects posture, movement and muscle function.
For example:
- If you experience persistent mid-back pain, we’ll look at improving diaphragm function alongside mobility through the thoracic spine.
- If your head sits forward and your neck muscles are constantly tight, we’ll explore how improving mobility through the chest and upper body can create more space for efficient breathing.
- If your breathing has become shallow due to stress, previous injury or long hours sitting, we’ll begin restoring more natural breathing patterns.
Every technique we practise is chosen because it relates to the needs of the people in the room.
Hour Three
Pilates That Works For Your Body
Finally, we’ll put everything into practice.
You’ll learn Pilates exercises that reinforce the movement patterns we’ve explored throughout the morning.
More importantly, you’ll learn the correct modifications for your own body.
Whether you attend Pilates classes regularly or exercise at home, you’ll leave knowing which exercises will benefit you most and how to perform them safely and effectively.
By the end of the retreat you’ll:
✔ Understand how breathing influences posture and movement
✔ Discover why your body may have developed certain movement patterns
✔ Learn breathing techniques specific to your needs
✔ Improve awareness of your posture and alignment
✔ Understand which Pilates exercises are most appropriate for your body
✔ Leave with practical exercises and educational handouts to continue using at home

A Morning That Could Change The Way You Move
At Honest Body, I don’t believe lasting change comes from exercising harder.
It comes from understanding your body.

With only five places available, this retreat offers the time, attention and individual guidance that simply isn’t possible in larger classes.
I’d love you to join me.
