“Is my posture causing my pain?” You’ve probably Googled it. You’ve maybe tried a foam roller, a posture strap, a standing desk — and still, that niggling pain in your back, neck, hip, or shoulder won’t let up.
The truth? Poor posture doesn’t just cause pain. It causes misaligned loading.
And that’s where the real damage starts.
Let’s break it down — and I’ll show you how to spot what’s really going on.
🧍♀️ The Wall Test — What Your Body’s Saying (Without Words)
Stand against a wall with your:
- Heels against the wall.
- Calves, buttocks, shoulders, and back of head connecting to the wall also.
Now ask yourself:
- Do both your calves reach the wall?
👉 If not, your pelvis is likely tilted forward. This increases strain on your lower back, knees, and hips. - Does only one calf reach?
👉 That’s a sign your pelvis is perhaps rotated or laterally tilted, not just tilted forward — and that needs professional analysis. - What part of your shoulders touches the wall?
👉 If it’s just the spine between the shoulder blades, your shoulder girdle is weak, which can lead to tension or pain running down the arm into the fingers. - Can you get the back of your head against the wall (not the top)?
👉 If not, the muscles at the back of your neck are shortened, and your neck is overloaded — often causing tension, headaches, or even jaw issues.
Posture is more than how you sit — it’s how you load your body. And if one part is off, others will overwork to compensate. ie Whee you feel the pain may to be where you need to treat.
🔍 Why Posture Pain Shows Up — Especially in Women Over 40
Hormonal shifts, fatigue, emotional load, and years of adapting around kids, careers, and chaos — it all stacks up in the way you move and hold your body.
What starts as “just a bit stiff” can become chronic hip pain.
What feels like tech neck becomes daily tension headaches.
And what looks like slumping? Often a mix of pelvic tilt, core deactivation, and shoulder collapse.
This isn’t just about standing taller.
It’s about stacking your body in a way that lets it absorb load — instead of getting crushed by it.
🛠️ The Fix Isn’t a Quick One — But It’s Simple
You don’t need a posture strap. You need understanding.
That’s why in the Honest Body Retreat, on January 10th in Renfrew, I teach you how to check your own alignment, what to look for, and how to begin correcting it gently — before jumping into strength work.
And in my 1:1 sessions, I assess your movement and alignment forensically — so we know whether we need to release, re-educate, or strengthen first.
Sometimes that means:
- Soft tissue work (with a Thera-ball or foam roller)
- Pelvic resets to release hip tension
- Simple ribcage breath work to down-regulate tension
- THEN strength — built from a safe, supportive place
