The Quiet Power of Relaxation: How Taking Time for Yourself Transformed My Health Journey
Have you ever felt so bad about being overweight that you used food for comfort? I’ve been there. The cycle of feeling down about my body, reaching for snacks to soothe the stress, and then feeling worse afterwards—it seemed endless. I spent years trying to diet and exercise my way to a “perfect” body, but no matter how hard I tried, I always felt like something was missing. I was focused on the wrong things: calories, workouts, the number on the scale. What I didn’t realise was that the key to lasting health was something far simpler—and more powerful—than any workout or diet plan. It was relaxation.
One day, exhausted from the constant push of trying to “get it right,” I decided to take a break. Not from food, but from the noise of everyday life. I went for a long walk in nature, with no agenda. The sound of birds chirping and the rustle of leaves calmed my overactive mind. It was the first time in a long while that I actually paused and just was. It didn’t take long for me to realise how much stress I’d been carrying around, and how that stress was influencing every part of my life, including my weight.
I started to learn something profound: relaxation isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity.
Why relaxing helps weight loss
When stressed, bodies go into survival mode. Cortisol, the stress hormone, spikes, and in response, our bodies hold onto fat. It’s a natural, primal response that once served us well in times of danger. But today, in our hectic, fast-paced world, stress is often chronic. This constant cortisol overload is one of the main culprits behind stubborn weight gain. When I’m stressed, I don’t just eat more, I eat differently. Instead of nourishing my body, I reach for comfort food to cope. Often without realising how it’s contributing to the cycle of weight gain and emotional distress.
For me, breaking that cycle didn’t come from counting calories or adding another HIIT workout to my schedule—it came from slowing down. I started incorporating small moments of relaxation into my day. Whether it was a short meditation in the morning, a quiet cup of tea in the afternoon, or an evening walk, these breaks helped me reset.
Just 10 minutes
Meditation became a game-changer. I’d wake up 10 minutes earlier each day to focus on my breath and clear my mind. I learned that when we’re in a relaxed state, our bodies can digest food better, and our hormones are more balanced. Stress hormones like cortisol are reduced, making it easier for my body to process the food I eat and prevent fat storage.
I also found that connecting with nature played a huge role in reducing my stress. There’s something magical about being outdoors, surrounded by the simplicity of the natural world. I noticed that after spending time in nature, my stress levels were lower, my energy was higher, and my cravings for unhealthy food were much less intense. Nature has a way of resetting our hormonal balance, and for me, it was the perfect antidote to years of emotional eating and body shame.
The most surprising part of this journey? The weight started to come off without me obsessing over it. When I focused on relaxation and prioritising my well-being—rather than stressing over my next meal or workout—I found a deeper sense of balance and peace. And when my hormones were balanced, weight loss became a natural side effect.
Relaxing is not selfish
Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential. I realised that true self-care is about listening to your body, nourishing it with love, and giving it space to heal. It’s not about pushing yourself harder or feeling guilty for taking a break—it’s about honouring the power of pause. When you make relaxation a priority, everything else falls into place.
So, if you’re stuck in that cycle of stress and weight gain, try something different. Take a break. Step outside. Meditate. Allow yourself the grace to just be. The changes you’re looking for might not come from pushing harder—they might come from simply slowing down.
