When stress builds, where do most people go?
Yoga. Stretching. Lying on a mat, trying to “release” the tension. Stretching-wont-fix-stress.
And don’t get me wrong — that can absolutely help.
But here’s the honest truth:
You can’t stretch your way out of stress.
Because stress doesn’t just sit in your muscles.
It sits in how you breathe.
How you hold yourself.
How you move — or don’t move — through your day.
It’s Not Just About Stretching — It’s About How You Move
Many people stretch the same tight areas again and again — shoulders, hips, back — but nothing really changes.
Why? Because the body isn’t asking for more length. It’s asking for better support. Stress creates tension patterns. It pulls your shoulders up, your head forward, your breath shallow.
And if you stay in that pattern all day…
A stretch at the end of it won’t undo what’s been reinforced for hours.
Breath Comes First — Always
In Pilates, there are six principles — and the first is breathing. Not by accident, but because your breath is what connects to the deeper muscles in your body — the ones that support you, stabilise you, and allow you to move well. When you breathe well your core engages naturally, your spine is supported, your shoulders don’t have to grip and hold tension.
One slow, controlled breath can completely change how a movement feels.
It brings awareness, it brings control and it brings calm.
Control, Not Collapse
First comes your breath and by adding focus and concentration you build control with your movements, this brings strength which then adds precision and flow to how you move, which has eliminated the stress you started with.
But here’s where most people go wrong…they move without awareness, they stretch without control, they exercise without understanding their position.
You Strengthen What You Practise
This is the part people don’t realise:
Whatever position you exercise in — you strengthen into it.
So if your posture is poor…if your alignment is off…if your shoulders are already tense… you’re not fixing the problem, you’re reinforcing it. That’s why alignment matters so much.
Alignment Changes Everything
When you stand tall, when your body is stacked well, when your breath supports your movement — everything shifts. Your shoulders soften, neck relax, movements feel lighter, body feels more in control
And that feeling? That’s where confidence comes from. Not from pushing harder — but from moving better.
Stress Reduces When the Body Feels Safe
The more you use your breath to gently engage the muscles around your centre…the less your shoulders need to carry the load.
Tension reduces.
Movement improves.
Your body starts to feel supported instead of strained.
And that’s when stress begins to ease — not because you stretched it away, but because your body no longer needs to hold onto it.
