Oestradiol is a hormone released during a monthly cycle and is linked with bone growth. During menopause oetradiol can lower and have significant effects. A lowering of oetradiol can cause skeletal problems such as bone density, also night sweats, hot flushes, vaginal dryness and mood swings. (http://www.yourhormones.info/hormones/oestradiol.aspx).

Increasing cruciferous vegetables during menopause can shift the oestrogen metabolism. Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, sprouts, bok choi and any dark green leafy vegetables will help to balance the hormone level of oestrogen reducing the side effects of its lowering such those mentioned above.

Eat at least one portion of cruciferous vegetables a day to keep well nourished and fight the side effects of menopause. Vegetable fibre also keeps the body functioning well and avoids constipation. ( See previous blog on constipation). Water can also come from these food sources. Fruit and vegetable have a water content as well as fibre. Fibre is also important in keeping the colon clear and healthy.

Fruit fibre is less beneficial to the hormone metabolism and though fruit also contains water it contains fruit sugars which at this point, need to be minimised. Consider lower sugar dense fruits such  as berries or apple as a choice rather than high sugar fruits such  as bananas.

Water is essential in our daily lives. Apart from keeping us hydrated, it helps to keep us alert, focused and energised. Water also helps us not to be constipated. Water detox our body, and keep the kidneys healthy too.
