April is Stress Awareness Month, and with World Health Day at the start of the week, there’s a natural focus on looking after our health.
We often hear the same messages:
Move more.
Exercise regularly.
Look after your body.
And while those messages are important—they miss something essential, because health isn’t just about doing more. It’s about understanding what your body actually needs. Otherwise, exercise is just adding more stress to your life.
When You’re Doing the Right Things—But It Still Doesn’t Feel Right
Many women I work with are already making the effort. They’re attending classes, they’re staying active, they’re trying to take care of themselves, but something still feels off.
- Movements don’t feel as comfortable as they should
- Strength isn’t building in the way they expected
- There’s uncertainty around whether they’re doing things correctly
- The body still feels tense, tired, or disconnected
Not enough to stop, but enough to question whether it’s really working.
Why Understanding Matters More Than Effort
Your body isn’t just something to exercise. It’s something to work with.
Especially during midlife, when:
- Hormonal changes can affect how your body responds to stress
- Recovery may take longer
- Tension can build more easily
- Movement patterns may need adjusting
Research shows that ongoing stress can influence how your nervous system, muscles, and breathing work together—affecting both performance and recovery. So even if you’re doing all the “right” things—If they’re not right for your body, progress can feel limited.
What Changes When You Understand Your Body
When you begin to understand how your body works, everything becomes clearer.
You start to notice:
- How your breath supports your movement
- How your pelvic floor contributes to strength and stability
- Where you may be holding unnecessary tension
- How to move in a way that feels more natural and supported
And with that—
Confidence starts to return.
A More Supportive Way to Build Strength
This is where the approach shifts. Away from:
Doing more
Pushing harder
Hoping it will improve
And towards:
- Moving with awareness
- Building strength gradually
- Supporting your body through breath and control
- Reducing tension, not adding to it
There is strong evidence that this kind of approach—combining movement with breath and control—can help regulate stress, improve nervous system balance, and support long-term physical health.
How I Work With You
My role is to help you make sense of your body.
To understand:
- What it’s doing
- What it exercise therapy it needs
- And how to move forward in a way that works for you, with a personalised programme for you
So you’re not left guessing. You’re moving with purpose.

A Final Thought
Looking after your health isn’t about doing everything.
It’s about doing what’s right for your body.
And once you understand that—
Everything else starts to feel easier.
