Have you noticed that exercise doesn’t seem to work the way it used to? You start walking more, you join a gym, you try another fitness challenge, you promise yourself you’ll be more consistent, yet instead of feeling stronger, you feel exhausted. Your joints ache, your recovery takes longer, the weight doesn’t shift and you begin to wonder whether you’re doing something wrong.
If this sounds familiar, I want to reassure you that there is a reason, and it isn’t a lack of willpower. It isn’t because you’re lazy and it certainly isn’t because you’re “too old”. In fact, the science tells us something very different.
Your Hormones Are Changing Your Body
Throughout our lives, hormones influence how our bodies function. From Oestrogen to Testosterone, both are growth hormones, they don’t just affect periods and menopause symptoms, in women. They play an important role in:
• Muscle maintenance
• Bone strength
• Joint health
• Recovery from exercise
• Fat storage
• Energy regulation
• Balance and coordination
As oestrogen declines during peri-menopause and menopause, research from the North American Menopause Society shows that women commonly experience an increase in body fat alongside a reduction in muscle mass and strength. This matters because muscle is not just for athletes.
Muscle supports your joints, supports your posture, helps you balance and muscle helps you walk. More importantly muscle helps you stay independent When muscle mass declines, everyday activities begin to feel harder. Walking further becomes more tiring. Getting up from a chair takes more effort. Balance feels less certain. Stairs become less appealing and we may consider moving to avid a staircase. Many women and men, assume this is simply an inevitable part of ageing.
It isn’t. It is often a sign that your body needs a different strategy.
Why More Exercise Isn’t Always The Answer
One of the biggest myths in health and fitness is that if something isn’t working, you simply need to do more of it.
Walk more.
Exercise harder.
Burn more calories.
Eat less.
Yet for many women, this approach simply creates frustration. The World Health Organisation and the American College of Sports Medicine both highlight the importance of strength training, balance work and functional movement as we age. Notice they don’t simply recommend more exercise. They recommend the right exercise. There is a difference.
A body experiencing hormonal change doesn’t always need more movement. Often it needs better movement. Movement that supports your joints, movement that improves alignment throughout the day, the right kind of movement that strengthens the muscles responsible for supporting your posture, balance and everyday function. This is where exercise therapy differs from exercise for the sake of exercise.
Why Alignment Matters More Than Most People Realise
In my previous blog we explored how walking well starts before you take the first step. The same principle applies here. If your body is not aligned efficiently, every movement becomes more demanding. The muscles designed to support you become less effective. Other muscles begin compensating and they may be too small to support you properly.
Tension develops > Energy is wasted > Discomfort increases > Confidence falls.
This is one reason excess body weight can feel so challenging. It’s not simply about carrying extra weight. It’s about how that weight affects movement patterns, balance and joint loading. Your body works harder simply to do everyday activities. Over time this can create a cycle:
- Weight gain.
- Less movement.
- More discomfort.
- Reduced confidence.
- Even less movement > Low mood leading to poor mental health.
The solution isn’t punishment. The solution is understanding.
What About Weight Loss Medication?
GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro have helped many people lose weight and improve their health.
For some individuals, they can be a valuable tool. However, they don’t replace movement. In fact, they make movement even more important. Research shows that weight loss can result in the loss of both fat and muscle tissue. The problem is that muscle is the very thing we need to protect as we age. Without strength training and appropriate exercise, a person may become lighter but not necessarily healthier, stronger or more functional. This is why exercise should never be viewed purely as a weight-loss tool.
Exercise is a health tool > A longevity tool > A confidence tool > A quality-of-life tool.
Whether you’re using medication or not, movement remains one of the most effective ways to maintain muscle, support bone density, improve balance and protect long-term health, including mental health.
The Real Goal Isn’t Weight Loss
This is where many women get stuck. They focus entirely on losing weight. What they really want is something much bigger. Women want energy, they want confidence, they want less pain, they want freedom, they want to walk further, travel more, be with and healthily interact with family and grandchildren. Sleep better. Feel comfortable in their own skin again. Weight loss may help some of those goals. But weight loss alone doesn’t guarantee them. Women want to fee heard.
- Strength does.
- Movement confidence does.
- Understanding your body does.
This Is Why The Honest Body Reset Exists
The Honest Body Reset isn’t a diet, it’s not a fitness challenge and it’s not a quick fix.
Honest Body Reset is a process of understanding what your body needs now. Not what it needed twenty years ago and not what worked for your friend. Particularly not what an influencer recommended online. What your body needs starts with us looking at your:
• Alignment
• Movement patterns
• Strength
• Balance
• Health history
• Hormonal influences
• Lifestyle demands
From there we create an approach that works with your body instead of fighting against it. Because when exercise is selected correctly, something remarkable happens. Movement starts to feel easier. Confidence returns. Pain reduces. Energy improves.Life expands again.
Exercise Should Give You More Life
The evidence is clear. Exercise remains one of the most powerful interventions available for maintaining health, managing long-term conditions and improving quality of life.
The challenge is that many women have never been shown how to exercise in a way that reflects the changes happening within their bodies. Your hormones have changed. So has your body has changed. By that definition your exercise needs to change too. That isn’t a setback. It’s an opportunity to start working with your body rather than against it, and when you do, everything begins to feel possible again.
